Every week, we'll select Taiwan's five business news from the previous week for your review.

Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (TSMC) investment in Dresden is aimed at strengthening corporate sustainability by taking advantage of green energy development in Germany, according to a veteran market information analyst in Taiwan.

Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) Taiwan's direct overseas investment reached a new high in the second quarter of this year, as tech firms were keen to send funds abroad for expansion, according to the central bank. Data compiled by the central bank showed direct overseas investment during the April-June period totaled US$10.7 billion, up from US$2.99 billion in the same period last year.

The National Science and Technology Council is proposing plans to promote Taiwan’s AI industries over the next five years. The council aims to invest more than US$1 billion in AI technologies across the country's south.

Government statistics show that average income in Taiwan hit a record high last year, but not everyone is feeling the benefits. Labor activist Roy Ngerng explains the difficult situation most households face in Taiwan, as even mid-range salaries only afford them the most basic necessities.

Several banks in Taiwan have reportedly reached lending capacity and have raised interest rates on mortgages. This trend could burden property buyers and renters.
